The Book of Hours
NO VACANCY GALLERY

Sound : The Spheres

The Book of Hours was a 5 day exhibition of sound and video works at No Vacancy Gallery in Melbourne’s CBD that concluded with a live AV performance by The Spheres in the gallery space on the exhibition’s closing night.
Drawing inspiration from the ‘city symphony’ films first popularised in the early years in documentary film history, the multi-source video installation presented a snapshot daily life in the city of Melbourne juxtaposing the personal and political within a Marxist analysis of the western metropolis.

Grey Skies Blue
NEON PARLOUR GALLERY

Vision : Guy Harris & Larry Lawson
Sound : The Spheres

Grey Skies Blue is a three-screen experimental documentary that examines and explores the relationship between sound and the moving image.
Adapted for the purposes of gallery based exhibition from its earlier iteration as a work of Expanded Cinema, the Grey Skies Blue sought to map the emotional landscape of a political protest to present an impressionistic portrait of ideology and power.
Presented as a multi-channel AV installation at Neon Parlour Gallery in 2017, the multi-screen video work and its accompanying soundtrack were exhibited daily from 6pm to midnight for ten days in the gallery’s front exhibition space which was visible to passers-by on the street who were encouraged to plug headphones into audio ports installed into the gallery’s window ledge for an immersive engagement with the multi-screen work and its soundtrack.
AV performances were also staged in the rear section of the gallery throughout the duration of the exhibition with The Spheres performing a live score to Grey Skies Blue (in its original expanded cinema configuration) as part of the exhibition’s closing night celebrations.

As a work of Expanded Cinema, Grey Skies Blue was first screened at Melbourne’s Trades Hall with live soundtrack in 2010 before subsequent screening-performances at Melbourne Fringe Festival in 2011 and the Dronestock Music Festival of 2012. As its final iteration, Grey Skies Blue was released as an AV box set by Almanac Recordings containing the final cut of the film, original soundtrack by The Spheres and film stills etched onto glass plates.
